If you experience mobility issues, pain, decreased flexibility, or difficulty performing daily activities due to Parkinson’s disease or another mobility-related condition, physical therapy is advisable. A qualified therapist can assess your needs and create a personalized treatment plan that can help improve your strength, flexibility, balance, and overall movement.
-
There isn’t a single “best” exercise, but aerobic, stretching, strength training, and balance exercises should all be incorporated. Consult a physical therapist with Parkinson’s expertise, like Michele Walker of ProActive Therapy & Wellness, to help tailor workouts to your individual needs.

Even if you think you can “get by” by just slowing down or doing things differently, you’re likely on the road toward losing your independence. If you feel limited in your movements and you can’t do what you want to do, schedule a time for us to talk, so that we can answer your questions and see if we’re the right fit for you.
-
This will depend on your specific needs. One to two times per week is usually adequate, but you may require a more frequent schedule of 3‒4 times a week, in the beginning, to establish a good core of activities. Over time, this may reduce to once a week as you become more confident in your new skills and have an independent program to do on your own at home. We can discuss this during our first informational visit.
-
ProActive Therapy & Wellness provides an all-in-one-place, multi-strategy, holistic approach that will give you the greatest chance of both managing and delaying your symptoms. Michele Walker has decades of experience and is certified in each therapy offering.

North Carolina is a direct access state, meaning you don’t have to be referred to ProActive by a physician. However, a physician will need to approve the treatment plan in order for it to be covered by insurance.
-
If you don’t have health insurance or you have insurance but don’t plan to file a claim with your insurance company, a Good Faith Estimate will be provided to you at our first informational visit.

Most sessions will take place at the ProActive Studio in Summerfield. There may be times when meeting at your home or at another fitness facility is appropriate. If so, we will discuss those options on a case-by-case basis.
-
Because we tailor your visits to your specific needs, there is no set amount of time, but most visits will take anywhere between 30 and 60 minutes.
-
We are credentialed with Medicare and can bill them directly for your treatment. For all other insurance plans, we can provide you with a detailed receipt that you can submit for reimbursement.

They're similar but different. Physical therapists are medically trained to deal with patients with diverse medical problems that affect mobility and self-care, such as orthopedic surgeries, neurological diseases, and muscular dysfunctions. We focus on getting people back to their normal levels. Athletic trainers usually work with people suffering from sports-related injuries or those who want to be above average in their fitness levels.
